WHAT AN ACTIVE ADULT COMMUNITY IS

An active adult community is a residential neighborhood — apartments, cottages, or houses — designed for adults 55 and older who live fully independently. There’s no medical care, no staff assisting with daily activities, and no dining hall schedule. It’s simply housing built around the way active adults actually want to live: less maintenance, more community, and neighbors in a similar stage of life.

The “active” part is the point. These communities are built for people who are traveling, volunteering, working part-time, gardening, and spending time with grandkids — not people who need care.

WHAT IT ISN’T

An active adult community is not:

— A nursing home — An assisted living facility — A continuing care retirement community (CCRC) — A medical setting of any kind

If you can manage your own daily life, an active adult community is designed for you. If you or a loved one needs hands-on help with daily activities, assisted living is the right conversation instead.

WHY THE 55+ AGE REQUIREMENT EXISTS

Federal housing law allows communities to set a 55+ age minimum so residents can live among peers. In practice, it means quieter streets, no late-night noise, and neighbors who understand your stage of life. Many residents describe it as the best of both worlds: the independence of a regular neighborhood with the built-in social life of a community.

WHAT TO EXPECT DAY TO DAY

Most active adult communities offer some combination of maintenance-free living (lawn care, exterior upkeep, repairs handled for you), shared amenities like a clubhouse or outdoor gathering spaces, and optional social activity — emphasis on optional. You’re never obligated to participate. You simply have the option, which is more than most traditional neighborhoods can say.

See one in person: Bradford of Mustang is a locally owned active adult community for 55+ adults, about 15 miles southwest of Oklahoma City. It offers one-bedroom apartments and two-bedroom cottages with fenced yards and attached garages, plus a private clubhouse, outdoor pavilion, and dog park.
